ALACHUA COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – If you plan on traveling on State Road (SR) 26 in Alachua County, be prepared to endure some heavy traffic for the next several hours.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) says SR 26, which is also known as Newberry Road, is down to one lane in the eastbound direction.
FDOT says overnight a gas main was hit on SR 26 just east of 75th Street.
The accident took place near the Interstate 75 ramps.
The clean-up and restoration of the gas main is causing backups in traffic on SR 26.
At 9:45 a.m. on Friday, a check of the Florida 511 camera in that area indicates there was no impact on I-75
FDOT recommends avoiding the area. Crews are putting up message boards further west advising motorists of the traffic conditions.
Gainesville Regional Utilities is currently on the scene handling the repairs. The lane closure is expected to last until noon.
