MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com)—This past Friday, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) say they uncovered over 200 grams of cocaine from a driver during a traffic stop.
Traffic Stop
On November 15, 2024, deputies conducted a routine traffic stop in the 700 block of NW 110th Street. The man stopped was later identified as 49-year-old Derrick Oliver.
During the stop, deputies say a clear baggie containing a white substance was seen in “plain view” inside of the vehicle.
Deputies then told Oliver to leave the vehicle, which they say he refused to do. Deputies had to use force to remove him.
Oliver put up a fight, according to deputies. He continued to resist the forceful removal and attempted to move toward the passenger side of the vehicle in an attempt to escape. Deputies deployed a Taser on two occasions, but both proved ineffective.
Deputies were soon able to restrain Oliver on the ground outside of his vehicle, but the problems didn’t stop there. The handcuffs originally supposed to restrain Oliver reportedly fell out of reach during the fight. A passerby, who they say had no connection in the dilemma, retrieved the handcuffs for them.
Deputies then cuffed Oliver and brought him into custody.
Car Search
Deputies say they located multiple items during their car search:
- A 9-millimeter Beretta handgun, loaded and reportedly stolen
- 216 grams of cocaine hidden throughout the vehicle
- Drug paraphernalia
- A large amount of counterfeit money
Aftermath
Following his arrest, deputies took Oliver to the Marion County Jail where they charged him with:
- Trafficking in Cocaine
- Grand Theft of a Firearm
- Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
- Resisting Arrest
As of Sunday, November 17, Oliver was out on a $19,000 bond.
Oliver’s next court date is scheduled for December 17, 2024.
