OCALA, FL (352today.com) – The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) says the drivers of a Mustang and Corvette were street racing Saturday morning when the Corvette crashed, smashing it to pieces and leaving the driver seriously injured.

Troopers say this all happened around 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, on State Road 200.

“Both drivers (were racing) operating their vehicle at a high rate of speed, making multiple lane changes in a reckless manner,” said FHP in a release.

Troopers say the Corvette driver hit a Toyota Prius being driving by a 78-year-old woman from Ocala. It then hit a utility pole and a tree. The impact of the crash left the Corvette in pieces, strewn for yards along the side of the road and ejected the driver.

FHP says the driver of the Mustang hid his vehicle behind a business in the area to briefly check on the status of the Corvette driver and then took off.

Investigators got photos of the Mustang driver and they need your help identifying him.

They say he’s heavy-set with arm tattoos, appears to be bald under his ball cap and has a beard.

“At the time of the crash, he was wearing a pink t-shirt and gray Under Armour shorts,” said FHP in the release. They described his car as a newer model Ford Mustang potentially a 2020-2023 model, silver in color with tinted windows.

Marion County Fire Rescue transported the 38-year-old driver of the Corvette as a “trauma alert” which means he was seriously injured. There’s no further information available at this time regarding his condition.

Troopers say neither the woman driving the Prius nor her 82-year-old male passenger were injured.
