LEVY COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) says a 74-year-old Fort McCoy man on a motorcycle died in a weekend accident.
FHP says the accident happened Saturday around 6:20 p.m. at the intersection of County Road (CR) 346A and Northwest 10th Avenue.
Troopers say a van was traveling north on Northwest 10th Avenue and the motorcycle was traveling east on CR 346A.
They say the driver of the van didn’t stop at the stop sign and the motorcyclist hit the left front side of the van.
Troopers say the motorcyclist died at the scene.
FHP says the driver of the van and four passengers bailed out of the 1998 Chevrolet Express van and took off on foot.
Troopers say through collective effort of FHP, the Levy and Marion County Sheriff’s Offices and the Florida Department of Corrections (DOC), the driver and all passengers were taken into custody at various times Saturday night.
A spokesperson says they used an FHP drone, Marion County’s helicopter and the DOC’s K-9 to search the area.
FHP says the driver of the van was identified as 31-year-old Demetrio Moreno-Atlahua of Live Oak. Moreno-Atlahua has been booked into the Levy County Jail on the following charges:
- Failure to remain at crash involving death
- Driving without a license
