NEW YORK CITY (352today.com) – Two Marion County high schools will be representing the 352 in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City.
Forest High School (FHS) and Lake Weir High School (LWHS) students have been preparing for this special moment for a long time.
The parade kicks off Saturday, March 16, at 11 a.m. and marches up 5th Avenue.
It’s considered one of New York City’s greatest traditions with the first parade being held on March 17, 1762.
Stephanie Matheny, FHS Band Booster president and band mom, says the students have practiced for countless hours.
“Endless hours of learning their musical instruments and developing their talents has led them to this honor. They’ve worked incredibly hard,” said Matheny. “They are also a very close group, a family. Full of support and unity.”
On top of this huge accomplishment, she says they’ve also earned four straight superior ratings in all four district assessments and says participation in the parade is a great way for them to end the year.
“The kids arrive to school one hour earlier every day for zero period. During marching season, they meet two more times after school for another two hours to practice their music and marching skills,” said Matheny.
She added that the students from both schools scheduled three extra 2.5-hour sessions just to prepare for the parade.
“They only had a few weeks to learn the new music pieces. They are very devoted to their programs and their directors,” added Matheny.
Matheny also credits the parents who donate much of their time and money to contribute to the students’ success.
