MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said Monday that investigators determined the abduction of 17-year-old Caden Speight reported last Thursday, Sept. 25 was fabricated.
Woods said deputies, along with state and federal agencies, worked through the night after Speight texted alarming messages to his family. Initial reports suggested he had been shot and abducted. The teen was found safe the following day.
“Because of their hard work, the initial details that Caden texted to his family, were proven to be false. Completely made up,” Woods said in a statement.
Detectives found evidence of a single gunshot near the location where Speight abandoned his truck. However, investigators learned he had purchased a bicycle, tent and camping supplies prior to his report. Witness statements also contradicted his accounts, Woods said.
According to the sheriff, Speight rode towards Williston and later shot himself in the leg with a handgun he had possessed throughout the incident. Woods emphasized there was “zero chance” his injury came from an assailant.
When asked whether Speight could face charges or be held responsible for the taxpayer costs of the search, Woods said those options remain “on the table,” but the investigation is ongoing.
Detectives have not been able to interview Speight because his parents have refused to allow it, Woods said.
