While this scenario might seem like a holiday movie moment, recent research suggests that gifting pets can have surprisingly positive outcomes. A study by the America Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) reveals some encouraging statistics about pets received as gifts.

The Surprising Success of Gifted Pets

The survey found that 96% of people who received pets as gifts reported either an increased attachment or no change in their feelings toward the animal. Notably, the study showed no significant difference in pet attachment whether the gift was a surprise or anticipated.

“When someone wants to give a pet for Christmas, they need to make sure that the person they are gifting wants a pet,” says Lilly Baron, president of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Ocala.

Proceed with Caution

Despite these promising findings, animal welfare organizations advise careful consideration when gifting a pet. Here are some key recommendations:

Tips for Responsible Pet Gifting
  1. Avoid Surprises for Non-Immediate Family Do not give a pet as a surprise gift to anyone outside your immediate family. Even if someone has expressed interest in a pet, they may not be ready at that exact moment.
  2. Collaborate on the Decision Discuss the potential pet with the recipient to ensure they’re prepared for the responsibility. This approach maintains the thoughtfulness of the gift while respecting the recipient’s readiness.
  3. Consider Alternative Gift Options
    • Pre-pay adoption fees at a local shelter
    • Give a pet supply gift card
    • Offer to help with initial pet-related expenses
  4. Respect Personal Choice Selecting a pet is deeply personal. Allowing the recipient to choose their own companion can prevent potential mismatches and ensure a stronger bond.

“When someone wants to give a pet for Christmas, they need to make sure that the person they are gifting wants a pet,” says Lilly Baron, president of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Ocala. She notes that a lot of people call after the holidays to surrender the pet they were given because they not in the position to care for it.

“It’s a big commitment – 15 years or so,” she adds. “Vet costs have gone through the roof. There are also some homeowners’ associations with rules on weight and sizes of pets.”

Baron says that with older people who are gifted a pet, there needs to be other considerations including who will take that pet should that person pass.

Eddie Leedy, director for the Humane Society of Marion County emphasizes how adopting a pet can be one of the most rewarding decisions for a family, especially children.

“A family pet can teach kids responsibility, enhance their emotional and physical well-being, provide valuable companionship, and instill love and compassion,” Leedy explains. “Of course, parents need to ensure the animal receives proper care, including covering veterinary expenses and training costs.”

He also says that at the Humane Society of Marion County, all family members are required to meet the pet before adopting, ensuring everyone agrees it’s the right fit for the home.

“This approach is key to making a thoughtful, lasting decision when welcoming a furry friend into your family,” he says.

The Bottom Line

While gifting a pet can result in heartwarming outcomes, it’s crucial to approach the idea thoughtfully. The goal is to create a positive experience for both the animal and the new owner.

By consulting with the potential pet owner, offering flexible gift options, and respecting their personal choice, you can help ensure a successful and joyful pet adoption.
