OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Your phone rings. It’s your mother. She’s crying. Her bank account is thousands of dollars short. You try to piece together what she’s saying through the sobs, and you figure out that she’s the victim of a scam.
For too many families in Marion County, this scenario is all too real. That’s where the Ocala Police Department’s (OPD) Seniors vs. Crime office steps in. Staffed by trained volunteers, the organization empowers older adults to fight back against scammers and dishonest businesses – without charging a penny.
Volunteers like Sandy Belinsky and Doug Hart are often the first line of defense. With empathy and persistence, they help seniors navigate the complex aftermath of financial fraud. Whether it’s recovering money lost in a contractor dispute or helping someone understand deceptive phone calls, the team works tirelessly to seek justice.

More than just a recovery resource, the group offers educational sessions and one-on-one support aimed at prevention. As scams grow increasingly sophisticated, often targeting emotions and trust, awareness can be the best defense.
Anyone over 55 who feels they’ve been wronged can reach out for help by calling 352-873-6377, or by sending an email to ocala@svcregion4.org.
