ALACHUA COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Some Alachua County residents are still talking about the wild night in their neighborhood this week.

Their peaceful sleep broken by the sounds of sirens and cars crashing around 3:30 a.m.

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) says on Tuesday, Dec. 19, a call came in about a car burglary in progress. Deputies responded to the scene, a house in the Belmont neighborhood which is just off Highway 241 in the Jonesville area.

ACSO posted a video on the department’s Facebook page of Sheriff Emery Gainey detailing the crime.

The video included clips from a home security camera, a deputy’s body camera and also dashcam video from a deputy’s cruiser.

The sheriff says when deputies arrived on the scene, they saw two people actively breaking into a car. He says the two took off running.

Bodycam footage shows a deputy chasing and catching one person. “One of the suspects was apprehended after discarding a firearm,” said Sheriff Gainey.

The sheriff says the other person tried to get away in a vehicle that had been stolen earlier.

Footage from a deputy’s dash camera shows the deputy stopping the vehicle by intentionally crashing into it as the driver makes a U-turn in the neighborhood.

The images show that the airbag in the deputy’s vehicle deployed.

The sheriff says the second suspect “was later apprehended by a deputy who saw him walking down roadway in a tank top in 40-degree weather.”

The sheriff says the two suspects are brothers – aged 16 and 17.

Gainey says the 17-year-old is previously charged with seven felonies and two misdemeanors including burglary, theft of a firearm, resisting, criminal mischief and fleeing.

The sheriff says the 16-year-old is a suspect in multiple ongoing investigations.

“Both of these suspects should have been at home asleep at this time of morning preparing to go to a classroom but as a result of their criminal activity they’ll now go to a courtroom,” said Sheriff Gainey.

The social media video ends with a word of advice to anyone watching:

“Remember, car burglaries are preventable. Lock your vehicles. Secure valuables especially your firearm. Make sure your cars are parked in well-lit areas, when possible,” the sheriff said.

Deputies urge area residents to check their vehicles and to contact them if you believe you had anything stolen. The number to call is 352-955-1818.
