MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The Marion County Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management (MCSODEM) is working to manage the aftermath of Hurricane Milton.

While crews focus on clearing debris, restoring utilities, and repairing infrastructure, MCSODEM says that it’s important for residents to follow these safety tips to avoid hazards and speed up recovery efforts.

Stay Off the Roads Unless Necessary

Keeping roads clear allows first responders, utility crews, and debris removal teams to work efficiently. Only go out if absolutely necessary.

Avoid Downed Power Lines, Especially Near Water

If you see a power line down near water, even a small puddle, steer clear. Water can conduct electricity, making the situation even more dangerous.

Don’t Stand Under Damaged Trees or Power Lines

Weakened tree limbs or damaged power lines might not fall immediately but could collapse hours or days later. Be cautious and avoid standing under them.

Never Drive or Walk Over Downed Power Lines

Always assume downed lines are live and dangerous. If a line falls on a vehicle, passengers should stay inside until help arrives.

Be Cautious with Standing Water

Floodwaters or standing water may conceal hidden dangers like live wires or deep holes. Do not attempt to drive or walk through standing water.

Report Property Damage as Soon as Possible

Document property damage with photographs and report it to the Marion County Property Appraiser.
