GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) – A Gainesville High School student was arrested Tuesday after bringing a loaded firearm onto campus, according to the Gainesville Police Department.

The GPD reports that the situation started when school resource officers got an anonymous tip about a student with a handgun in his backpack. Officers tried to stop the student when he arrived, but he was eventually found in a classroom.

Working with school administrators, officers say they removed the student from the classroom for questioning. When approached by officers, they say that the student attempted to flee but was immediately detained. Following his detention, police say that the student admitted to having a gun in his possession.

A later search of the student’s backpack found a loaded 9mm handgun. When asked about it, the student said he discovered the gun in a nearby area and was carrying it for his safety.

The student, who is currently on probation, now faces multiple charges including:

  • Carrying a concealed firearm
  • Resisting without violence
  • Possession of a firearm on school property

The investigation is still in progress. If you have more information about this incident, please reach out to the GPD.
