SILVER SPRINGS, FL (352today.com) – The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is honoring the memory of K-9 Leo, who died in the line of duty one year ago.

On Feb. 17, 2024, K-9 Leo was assisting deputies in apprehending a suspect in Silver Springs when he was struck by gunfire. He was transported to the University of Florida Veterinary Hospital for treatment, but his injuries proved fatal. He died on Feb. 20, 2024.

K-9 Leo, a valued member of the MCSO K-9 Unit, was known for his dedication, loyalty, and service to the community. Sheriff Billy Woods described him as a hero who protected not only his fellow deputies but also the residents of Marion County.

His handler, Sgt. Justin Tortora, and the entire agency continue to feel the loss of the highly trained K-9. “Leo was more than a working dog—he was family,” the department said in a statement.

A year after his passing, MCSO is asking the community to join in remembering K-9 Leo’s service and sacrifice. His memory remains a lasting symbol of bravery and dedication in law enforcement.
