CITRA, FL (352today.com) – Marion County Fire Rescue (MCFR) responded to a vehicle-versus-pedestrian wreck early this morning at the intersection of NE 189th Lane and N. US Highway 301. Units were dispatched at 5:11 a.m., and the first responders arrived on the scene at 5:16 a.m. The pedestrian, a 40-year-old man from Citra, was declared deceased by 5:18 a.m.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the incident occurred when a tractor-trailer, driven by a 36-year-old man from Palatka, was traveling south in the left lane of US-301. Simultaneously, an SUV, driven by a 65-year-old man from Sprakers, NY, was traveling north in the same lane. The pedestrian was reportedly walking or standing in the southbound left lane when the tractor-trailer driver was unable to avoid the collision. FHP says that the SUV’s left front section struck the pedestrian, causing him to be redirected across the center median into the northbound lanes. The SUV driver then struck the pedestrian with the undercarriage as he lay in the road.
Both vehicle drivers remained on the scene, and no injuries were reported to either the semi driver or the SUV driver and his 65-year-old female passenger from Parrish, FL.
