OCALA, FL (352today.com) – $5.7 million. That’s how much donation money was officially granted to the Marion County Animal Shelter’s construction this past week.

The donation came from two sources: $1 million from the St. Bernard Foundation and $4.7 million from R+L Carriers.

At the most recent commissioners meeting, the Marion County Board of County Commissioners approved allocating $5.7 million to the shelter’s general fund.

This change in the general fund brings the shelter’s appropriation total to $30,047,589.

In addition to funding approval, the commission approved the shelter’s third phase of construction, keeping it on track for its grand opening in December.

That means improved facilities for animal care, more space, and likely better outcomes for lost or homeless pets.

Stacie Causey, Marion County’s Public Relations Manager, says the commission also greenlit the installation of a generator and Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS), which will ensure the shelter can continue operating even in the event of a power outage.

“The new shelter is going to be stronger, smarter, and ready to serve Marion County for years to come,” says Causey. “Stay tuned — the future of animal care is being built right now!”
