OCALA, FL. (352 Today) A mattress fire at the Ocala Place Apartments prompted a multi-unit response from Ocala Fire Rescue Friday evening, resulting in a swift containment and no reported injuries.

At approximately 5:01 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to 2135 NW First Ave. after receiving reports of smoke and flames at a single-story, multi-family apartment building. Crews from Engines 1 and 5, Ladder 3, Squad 7, and Battalion Chiefs 11 and 22 responded to the call.

Ladder 3 was the first to arrive, reporting visible flames through a front window and heavy black smoke pouring from an open front door. Crews made immediate entry to locate the fire, while Rescue 1 conducted a primary search of the unit to ensure no one was inside.

Engine 5 secured a hydrant to establish a reliable water supply as Ladder 3 crews identified the source of the fire—a burning mattress inside the unit. Firefighters used a preconnected hose line to extinguish the flames, containing the blaze within six minutes of arrival.

With the fire under control, Engine 5 checked for fire extension, and Squad 7 assisted with ventilation efforts to clear smoke and improve visibility throughout the structure.

No residents or first responders were injured in the incident. The fire has been ruled accidental.

The Ocala Police Department and Marion County Fire Rescue also responded and assisted at the scene.
