LAKE COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Empire Church Road between Bear Lake Road and Edgehill Drive in Groveland is closed after a significant roadway depression was discovered early Monday morning near 5603 Empire Church Road. County Public Works crews responded immediately to assess the site, and geotechnical analysis is underway.
The analysis will help determine if the depression is a sinkhole.
“We understand how disruptive this closure is for nearby residents, and we don’t take that lightly,” said Lake County Assistant County Manager Bobby Bonilla. “Our crews are actively evaluating the situation and working as quickly and safely as possible to identify a solution and reopen the road.”
The depression measures approximately 90 feet wide, 200 feet long, and about 50 feet deep. However, it appears to be growing in size.
Approximately 1,400 cars per day travel on Empire Church Road.
Empire Church Road is completely closed between Bear Lake Road and Edgehill Drive. Residents should use Mascotte Empire Road as a detour.
