OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Reflect and learn about the history of slavery during the Florida’s Eve of Emancipation Program at the Fort King National Historic Landmark. This event will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at 3925 E. Fort King St., Ocala. This program is held in honor of Florida’s Emancipation Day on Saturday, May 23.
Enjoy a free day out with the family for a learning experience anyone can join for a chance to learn about an important part of Florida’s history. Guests will have the opportunity to learn more about slavery in Spanish and early U.S. Florida. The program will also expand on the effects slavery has had on Seminole relations in the U.S. Guests will also learn the reason behind Florida’s Emancipation Day taking place on May 23 rather than the Juneteenth holiday.
As an addition to the remembrance of this part of Florida’s history, there will be a special unveiling of a meaningful painting. Local artist, Charles Eady, will be unveiling his newest painting that portrays Black Seminole, Abraham. Abraham was known for his interpreter work and as a Black Seminole leader in Florida who had a large influence.
