OCALA, FL (352today.com) – As the nation continues celebrating its 250th anniversary, Heart of the Park is inviting residents to step back in time while reflecting on the people, events and ideals that helped shape the United States.
Located at 516 NE Sanchez Ave. in Tuscawilla Park, Heart of the Park serves as a gathering place for community events, educational programming and cultural experiences. This summer, the venue will host several events as part of Marion County’s America 250 celebration, offering opportunities to learn about the nation’s history while honoring those who continue to serve their communities today.
The celebration begins Sunday, June 28, with the grand opening of the America 250 Exhibit and Education Center from 1 to 3 p.m. The exhibit, presented in partnership with the Sons and Daughters of American Revolution, will explore the nation’s founding through artifacts, displays and educational materials. Organizers say the exhibit is designed to help visitors better understand the people and events that shaped America’s fight for independence while providing a foundation for the week of commemorative activities to follow.
Additional programming begins the same day with the unveiling of two special exhibits at 1:30 p.m. Visitors can explore a collection celebrating the legacy of The Royal Guardsmen, the Ocala-based band behind the hit song “Snoopy vs. the Red Baron,” featuring vintage photographs, promotional materials and memorabilia. A second exhibit, “Hometown Hero,” honors the life and service of Lamont H. Pharmer, a Korean War paratrooper, Vietnam veteran and longtime Silver River Museum volunteer whose work helped preserve thousands of Florida artifacts.
Other events planned during the week include the “War of 1812; Causes, Major Events, and Impact” on Tuesday, June 30, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., a presentation by U.S. Navy Commander Diane Trice about the War of 1812, and the Martha Washington Summer Social on Wednesday, July 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Presented by the Ocala Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the program will feature an overview of 250 years of American authors, period attire, music and refreshments. Guest speaker J. Lenora Bresler will lead the presentation. Admission is $10 and reservations are available online.
Visitors can also participate in an America 250 Scavenger Hunt throughout Tuscawilla Park. Presented by the Ocala Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the activity encourages participants to explore the park while answering history-themed questions inspired by the American Revolution. Completed entries may be submitted at Heart of the Park for a chance to win one of three prizes.
On Thursday, July 2, Heart of the Park will host Living History Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in partnership with the Fort King Heritage Foundation. The event will feature interactive exhibits and historical demonstrations designed to help visitors better understand Florida’s role in American history. At 11:30 a.m., historian Dr. Roger Smith of the University of Florida will present “The 14th Colony: The American Revolution’s Best Kept Secret,” exploring Florida’s often-overlooked role during the Revolutionary War era.
The week’s programming will conclude Friday, July 3, with Picnic in the Park & Time Capsule Dedication from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event will feature live music, vendors, food trucks, yard games and guest speakers. Visitors can also attend presentations by Marc Pellicano on the history of recorded sound and the phonograph at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
The celebration will culminate with a Time Capsule Dedication beginning at 2 p.m., preserving a snapshot of life in Marion County during America’s 250th anniversary year for future generations. Organizers hope the project will provide future generations with a glimpse into the community’s values, experiences and traditions.
Together, the events transform Heart of the Park into a living classroom where visitors can explore the nation’s past while creating new memories for the future. As America marks 250 years of history, the venue is providing a space for residents to learn, reflect and celebrate the stories that continue to define the country and the local community.
Additional information and RSVP information for each event is available at Heart of the Park’s events page.
