LEVY COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The Levy County Sheriff’s Office announced this week that a Cedar Key man has been arrested for aggravated animal abuse.
According to the announcement, detectives arrested 47-year-old John Whitehead on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, after receiving a report from an unnamed concerned citizen that Whitehead’s dog had gone missing under suspicious circumstances, and that Whithead admitted in conversation he had killed it.
An investigation reportedly determined that Whitehead had subjected the dog to multiple incidents of pain and abuse “over the course of several months, taking his frustration out on the animal due to a failed relationship.” The suspect reportedly told investigators about inflicting injuries for which he sought no veterinary care, and that those injuries “and additional abuse” caused the dog’s death.
Whitehead has been charged with five counts of aggravated animal abuse. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
