OCALA, FL (352today.com) – An exhibition of 25 photographs by the late, celebrated Florida-based photographer Randal Levenson will go on display in the Appleton Museum of Art‘s Balcony Gallery for Florida Artists beginning Saturday, July 4, 2026.
“Life, Labor and Lens: Randal Levenson’s Working-Class America” is drawn from some 80 works by Levenson in the museum’s permanent collection. These black-and-white and color images evoke the photographer’s journeys across the United States, and “offer a layered account of the American experience: gritty yet beautiful, sentimental yet honest,” according to a statement from the museum.

Levenson was born in Wichita Falls, TX in 1946. His father gave him a Brownie camera when he was a young boy, igniting a lifelong passion for the form. Perhaps best known for his book “In Search of the Monkey Girl,” which candidly chronicled his travels with American sideshow performers. A bit of a vagabond soul, Levenson crisscrossed the country extensively, but made home bases in both Gainesville and Miami. He died in Ohio in 2022.
“Life, Labor and Lens: Randal Levenson’s Working-Class America” runs through Jan. 24, 2027.
The College of Central Florida Appleton Museum of Art is located at 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala. Admission to the museum is free throughout the month of July in celebration of America’s 250th birthday.
