MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The Associated Press has called a nail-biter of a race that had the entire nation watching: Incumbent Republican Ashley Moody has narrowly beaten Democratic Socialist Angie Nixon.

With 95.5 percent of the vote in, Moody leads with 50.7 percent of the vote compared to Nixon’s 48.2 percent.

Moody was appointed to her Senate seat in January 2025, after Marco Rubio vacated it to become U.S. secretary of state. Before that, she was the Attorney General for the State of Florida.

Nixon represents District 13 in the Florida House of Representatives. She gained national attention when she became the Democratic candidate for the 2026 midterm Senate special election after running a grassroots campaign on a progressive platform.
