MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The Florida Department of Health in Marion County (DOH-Marion) is warning residents and visitors to exercise caution after blue-green algae was detected at the Hope Boat Ramp on Lake Weir during testing conducted July 28, 2025. While no toxins were found at the time of testing, blue-green algae can produce harmful toxins under the right conditions.

Officials say environmental factors such as warm temperatures and still water can quickly change the situation, so ongoing caution is advised.

What to Know About Blue-Green Algae

Blue-green algae are naturally occurring bacteria found in Florida’s freshwater environments. When they multiply rapidly, they form blooms that:

  • Discolor the water
  • Create mats that may smell bad
  • Appear as scum, foam, or paint-like streaks in various colors

Although not always visible, blue-green algae can still be present and pose health risks.

Health and Safety Recommendations

DOH-Marion advises the public to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid contact: Do not drink, swim, wade, or use personal watercraft in water with visible blooms.
  • Rinse after exposure: Wash skin and clothing with soap and water if contact occurs.
  • Protect pets and livestock: Keep animals away from contaminated water and provide clean drinking water.
  • Do not cook or clean with contaminated water. Boiling does not remove toxins.
  • Fish safety: Eat only fillets from healthy fish, rinse them with clean water, discard guts, and cook thoroughly.
  • Avoid shellfish from bloom-affected area
