GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) – For many families, rising utility bills and aging appliances are a constant concern. That’s why the story of Robert Monk, a local veteran who just received a free HVAC system upgrade, hits close to home and offers a reminder that a little hope (and a contest entry) can go a long way.
Robert Monk, a retired Navy veteran and Gainesville resident of 46 years, recently won a complete HVAC makeover through Mid Florida Heating & Air’s Ugliest AC contest. His original system, installed in 1972, had become increasingly expensive to run.

“I saw the contest, and I knew my AC was ugly. So, I’d give it a chance and enter,” Monk said. “This system came with the house, and I’ve kept it running all this time. But over the years, the heating and cooling costs have continued to rise. This opportunity means a chance at lower bills and more comfort for my home.”
With help from their manufacturer partners, Mid Florida Heating & Air stepped in to give Monk’s home a much-needed energy-efficient upgrade.
“We’ve been in business for nearly 43 years, and Gainesville has supported us every step of the way. This was our moment to give back,” said Travis Lyons, Regional VP.
