SUMTER COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – UPDATE, 11:30 a.m.: 352today has confirmed emergency crews transported three people for injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol says two men suffered non life-threatening injuries.
Between information from troopers and what other sources have told us a dump truck headed northbound swerved across two lanes of traffic and hit a GMC pickup truck. We’re told the vehicles rolled and the cab of the dump truck separated from the trailer and flipped over the median into the southbound lanes blocking them.
UPDATE, 05/04/2024 6:50 a.m.: Florida’s Turnpike in Sumter County reopened last Friday night following a severe crash involving multiple vehicles.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) sent out an alert just after 10 p.m. saying that all lanes were reopen and the crash near mile marker 304 was cleared.

ORIGINAL, 05/03/2024: A multiple-vehicle crash snarled southbound traffic on Florida’s Turnpike Friday evening.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said in Facebook post the accident happened on the turnpike which is also known as State Road 91 at mile marker 304 near the U.S. 301 exit for Wildwood.

Florida 511, the state Department of Transportation’s real-time traffic website, says the accident happened around 6:15 p.m.
The sheriff’s office said the southbound lanes and one northbound lane were shutdown.
SCSO also indicated medical air support might be needed to transport injured victims.

At one point, the traffic was backed up for about three miles to mile marker 307.
As of this publication time, traffic appears to still be very slow moving through the area.
