GILCHRIST COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) responded to two separate shootings at Ginnie Springs over the Memorial Day weekend.
The popular park was temporarily closed during the hot holiday weekend as authorities investigated the shootings.
The sheriff’s office said the shootings occurred during the overnight hours of Friday, May 24, and Saturday, May 25.
GCSO and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) are investigating both crimes. Few details have been released. The sheriff’s office says that’s to maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigations.
On Sunday, the sheriff’s office posted on Facebook saying at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, deputies responded to an attempted murder that occurred in the roadway inside Ginnie Springs between the Devil’s Spring and the tube launch.
The post asked for help identifying a woman in her 20’s believed to be involved in the shooting. She was described as having long braids and light tinted contacts. She was wearing circular hoop earrings and multiple rings.
They also asked for witnesses – especially ones with photos or video – to come forward.
The sheriff’s office later updated the post indicating they are no longer seeking the woman’s identity.
Ginnie Springs is a popular destination for adults and children looking to cool off in the 72-degree crystal clear spring water where park-goers enjoy floating in tubes, paddleboarding, snorkeling, swimming and other water-related activities.
A post on the park’s Facebook page indicates normal operations resume Tuesday at 8 a.m.
