OCALA, FL (352today.com) – For most of the country, Labor Day symbolizes summer’s unofficial end.  For Floridians, it brings us the busiest month of the hurricane season.

Between 1991 and 2020, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that there were typically four to five storms that developed every September. Out of these storms, maybe two to three turned into hurricanes, and at least one of them was classified as Category 3 or higher.

The NHC.NOAA map shows a relatively quiet beginning to September 2024.

Over the last six years, there have been at least six storms in September every year. In fact, the last seven Septembers have seen three or four hurricanes each. The 2020 hurricane season was especially chaotic, with a record-breaking 10 storms in September alone. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Hurricane Research Division (NOAA-HRD), September has consistently been the month with the most hurricane landfalls in the U.S. since the mid-1800s.

While each day includes a high percentage of showers and storms, they will likely arrive in the afternoons allowing for plenty of time to enjoy outdoor activities on Labor Day and the remainder of the week.  And the NHC is showing very little activity in the Atlantic.
