MOUNT DORA, FL (352today.com) – Bagpipes, kilts, and the echo of Celtic heritage will once again take center stage as the Mount Dora Scottish Highland Festival returns Feb. 14-16, 2025. This annual celebration not only showcases Scottish music, athletics, and traditions but also highlights the historic connection between Mount Dora and its Sister City, Forres, Scotland.
Over the years, the festival has grown into one of the premier Scottish Highland Festivals in the Southern United States, drawing visitors from across the country. Rooted in tradition and community, the event serves as a bridge between Florida and Scotland, fostering cultural exchange through a Student Exchange Program and other joint initiatives.
Since the festival’s inception, Mount Dora has formed its own Bagpipe Band, which has proudly performed throughout Florida and even in Forres, Scotland. Additionally, Mount Dora’s official tartan has been registered in Edinburgh, Scotland, further cementing the city’s deep ties to Scottish heritage.
A Weekend Steeped in Tradition
The festival kicks off Friday evening at Donnelly Park with a high-energy musical lineup, featuring the renowned Seán Heely Celtic Band, the mystical melodies of The Harp Twins, and the foot-stomping rhythms of Port O’Thority. As the weekend unfolds, festivalgoers can look forward to the Tartan Parade and Opening Ceremonies on Saturday, where clans and pipe bands proudly display their heritage.
“For a first-time attendee, there is much to experience with the diversity of Celtic music that ranges from traditional vocals and harps to rock music that makes you want to dance,” said Chris Carson, City of Mount Dora Cultural & Special Events Manager. “Throughout Saturday and Sunday, witnessing strength and agility for Highland Athletics as both men and women compete for awards. History and learning your Scottish roots is a very key component as there are a number of societies that will help you trace your ancestry roots. One of the favorite things to check are all the authentic vendors who offer everything from kilts to Scottish wares.”
One of the festival’s most anticipated moments is the Tartan Parade and Opening Ceremonies, where proud clans and pipe bands from across the country—including some as far as Panama City Beach—march in celebration of their Scottish ancestry.
“My personal highlights that I have experienced have been the collaboration of bagpipe bands performing together in the Tartan Parade, which precedes the Opening Ceremonies,” Carson added. “Pipe bands that will be joining the City of Mount Dora Pipe Band will include Jacksonville Pipes and Drums, Panama City Pipes and Drums, and Daytona Beach Pipes and Drums. Another experience to suggest is witnessing people of all ages interact with one another throughout the course of the weekend.”
With authentic food vendors serving up haggis, Scotch eggs, and other Highland delicacies, alongside whiskey tastings and artisan crafts, the festival offers a full sensory experience.
