MICANOPY, FL (352today.com) – Starting today, Oct. 1, fire service in the town of Micanopy will be provided by the Alachua County Fire Rescue Department (ACFR).
ACFR says the transition came at the request of Micanopy officials and will dramatically strengthen fire and rescue services in this area.
ACFR says they entered into an agreement last May to transition the services.
ACFR says a dedicated three-person crew operating an Advanced Life Support Engine, will provide 24/7 coverage year-round.
Station 64 (ACFR’s 16th station) will provide service to residents and properties in an over 25 square mile area. ACFR says this new station will meet or exceed the standards recognized by the Insurance Service Office (ISO), which will benefit property owners’ insurance rates.
“This is a major step forward in providing critical emergency services to residents of the town of Micanopy and the surrounding unincorporated area,” said Alachua County Fire Rescue Chief Harold Theus in a release. “I am grateful for the cooperation of all of the elected officials and for their support and commitment to public safety.”
The mayor of Micanopy and ACFR fire chief praised the collaborative agreement in a video posted on Alachua County’s YouTube page.
