MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – More than 6,700 homes and small businesses in Summerfield, Citra, and Umatilla now have access to high-speed internet and other services thanks to a new fiber-optic buildout by Spectrum. The expansion is part of the companyโ€™s ongoing efforts to improve rural broadband through its national Rural Construction Initiative.

The project is backed by Charter Communicationsโ€™ $7 billion private investment aimed at reaching approximately 1.7 million new locations across the U.S.

โ€œSpectrum is bringing gigabit broadband to unserved communities in Florida and across America,โ€ said John Dosher, Area Vice President of Field Operations, Charter Communications. โ€œOur investment is providing local residents and small businesses superior connectivity at highly competitive prices, backed by a team of skilled local technicians and 100% U.S.-based customer service.โ€

Spectrum also partnered with the Florida Office of Broadband to extend service to more underserved areas through the stateโ€™s Broadband Opportunity Program.

โ€œAccess to high-speed internet is critical for the success of our farmers and businesses, students and educators, healthcare providers and patients,โ€ said Sen. Stan McClain. โ€œSpectrumโ€™s broadband expansion in Central Florida is helping our rural communities keep pace with their more urban neighbors.โ€

Services now available include internet with speeds up to 1 Gbps, mobile phone options, and over 85,000 On Demand TV selections. Spectrum Business customers can choose from 500 Mbps, 750 Mbps, and 1 Gbps plans.

โ€œTodayโ€™s announcement is great news for Marion County residents, especially those who have gone without reliable internet access for far too long,โ€ said Commissioner Michelle Stone. โ€œI thank Spectrum for its dedication to expand connectivity service to the most rural parts of North Central Florida.โ€

According to the FCCโ€™s most recent broadband report, Spectrum Internet exceeded advertised speeds across all measured tiers, even during peak usage hours.
