OCALA, FL (352today.com) – A local teacher who helps students find their passion in healthcare is in the spotlight. Sunny Collins, a health occupational sciences teacher at Forest High School, has been named the latest recipient of the “Thank a Teacher” award, a recognition program supported by HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, HCA Florida West Marion Hospital, and the Public Education Foundation of Marion County (PEFMC).
Collins was surprised with the honor on April 24 during a school ceremony attended by hospital CEOs Alan Keesee and Isaiah Zirkle, along with Marion County School Board Chairwoman Lori Conrad, members Sarah James and Nancy Thrower, and other community leaders.
A nomination submitted on Collins’ behalf commended her dedication to student growth, both in and out of the classroom. As sponsor of the school’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Club, Collins plays a pivotal role in guiding students toward careers in the medical field. “She encourages them and inspires them to be better students,” the nomination read. “She helps her students find their passion in the medical field and helps foster their goals.”
Hospital leaders praised her lasting impact. “At HCA Florida Healthcare, we think it is critical to recognize teachers, such as Sunny, who strive each day to provide students that sound foundation for future success,” said Keesee.
Each “Thank a Teacher” honoree receives $250 and an email filled with heartfelt messages submitted by students, families, and colleagues. The program runs throughout the 2024-25 school year, encouraging the community to share how teachers have made a difference.
