FT. PIERCE, FL (352today.com) — The sixth-seeded College of Central Florida (CF) baseball team came out swinging in the opening game of the FCSAA Region 8 tournament, overpowering third-seeded Indian River State College 13-4 on Friday afternoon.

Right-hander Jay Jung led the way on the mound for the Patriots, going the distance in a complete game win. He allowed just four runs on five hits and struck out five to improve to 5-2 on the season. The performance marked Jung’s second win over the Pioneers in just over a week. Earlier in the day, he was named a second team All-Citrus Conference selection.

At the plate, the Patriots racked up 19 hits, including home runs from three key contributors. Dawson Harman, recently named Citrus Conference Player of the Year, went 4-for-5 with a double and a school record-tying 22nd home run of the season. He also added three RBIs and scored three times. Victor Martinez launched his 10th homer of the season, while Logan Chapman connected on his third, finishing with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Anthony Diaz, Miles Curley, and Tanner Swank each tallied three hits to help CF pull away with a 9-0 run over the final four innings.

With the win, the Patriots improve to 35-16 and move into the winner’s bracket of the Fort Pierce regional. They are now just one win away from advancing to the Region 8 Final Four in Port Charlotte. Indian River State drops to 34-15.

“Getting the win in game one was huge, but we know we still have some unfinished business to take care of,” said CF assistant coach Tony Voiro.

Game two of the regional is scheduled for Saturday at 1p.m.
