DUNNELLON, FL (352today.com) — As summer approaches and visitors flock to the Rainbow River, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is reminding the public to follow all local ordinances and state boating laws to ensure a safe and enjoyable season on the water.
Alcohol and disposable containers are strictly prohibited on the Rainbow River. Under Marion County ordinance, anyone caught with alcohol or single-use items such as chip bags, plastic bottles, or Styrofoam cups faces a $50 fine for each violation. Only reusable containers are allowed; if it can’t go in a dishwasher, it shouldn’t be on the river.
The Rainbow River is also designated as an “Idle Speed Only” zone from the headspring to the Withlacoochee River. Speeding, reckless operation, or careless boating may result in a $140 fine.
Florida law requires all vessels to carry safety equipment, including:
- A life jacket for each person onboard
- A whistle or horn
- A throwable flotation device (for boats over 16 feet)
- A fire extinguisher (depending on boat type)
Children under age 6 must wear a life jacket while the vessel is underway, even if the motor is off and the boat is drifting. Failure to comply can result in a $140 fine.
All boats and personal watercraft must also be properly registered. Fines of $123 may be issued for expired or missing registration, incorrect number display, or failure to carry proof of registration.
Paddleboarders are required to have a life jacket and whistle on board, and children under 6 must wear the life jacket at all times.
MCSO also reminds visitors to keep music volume down out of respect for other rivergoers and nearby residents.
“These rules are in place to protect you, others, and one of Marion County’s greatest natural treasures,” the agency stated.
