SUMTER COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – In response to safety concerns raised by residents during public meetings, and following a comprehensive study of potential improvements, the Sumter County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has approved the design and construction of a directional median opening at the intersection of Morse Boulevard and Chitty Chatty Run/Sandalwood Condominiums.

The decision follows a detailed Intersection Alternatives Study conducted by Sumter County Public Works in coordination with its general consultant, Kimley-Horn, at the direction of the BOCC.

Alternatives Considered:

No-Build (Current Configuration): Maintains the full median opening with no changes.

Roundabout:

Would require significant redesign, right-of-way acquisition, and have environmental impacts.

Directional Median Opening (Selected):

Modifies the intersection to allow only specific turning movements, reducing conflict points and improving safety.

Why the Directional Median Was Chosen:

  • Improves safety and traffic flow
  • Avoids the need for additional property acquisition
  • Minimizes environmental impacts
  • Can be built within the existing right-of-way
  • Most cost-effective and least disruptive solution

“The directional median alternative offers an improvement in safety and traffic flow while avoiding adverse impacts of the other alternatives,” said Matthew Tadlock, Assistant Public Works Director – Planning and Design. “It can be built within the existing right-of-way and avoids the need for additional property or environmental impacts, making it a balanced and responsible alternative based on the analysis.”

Construction Completion Target:

May 2026
