OCALA, FL (352Today.com) – It’s a commonly held belief among those with a passion for the supernatural that the older a place is, the more likely it is to be haunted.
If that really is the case, then Ocala’s Fort King National Historic Landmark just might have more than its fair share of spirits roaming its venerable spaces. A relic of the Seminole Wars, this U.S. Army frontier fort was commissioned in 1827. These days, Fort King is a center of historical and archaeological education, but on Saturday, Oct. 18, volunteers from the Marion County Public Library will take visitors on a spooky (but family-friendly!) tour of its shadowy past.
The free ‘Phantoms in the Fort’ event kicks off at 5 p.m. with a hands-on archaeological demonstration, games, food trucks and live bluegrass music by The Sandy Back Porch Band. When the sun sets, visitors are invited to participate in a lantern-lit stroll of the fort’s grounds, as their hosts share stories that will grow darker along with the night.
The Fort King National Historic Landmark is located at 3925 East Ft. King Street. Patrons are encouraged to bring canned goods for donation to area food banks, along with their own chairs and blankets, as seating is limited. Parking will be available in the Kline Lot at NE 41st Ave.; just follow the signs.
