LAKE COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Lake County is providing an update regarding the roadway depression that appeared on Empire Church Road in the Groveland area on Feb. 2, 2026.
After the depression was discovered, Lake County secured the area and engaged Tierra, Inc., a geotechnical engineering firm, to evaluate the site and determine the cause.
Based on Tierra’s completed evaluation, the depression has been confirmed as a sinkhole. The report notes that the area of Central Florida where the roadway is located has a moderate to high potential for sinkhole development due to underlying limestone geology. Over time, natural processes can create voids beneath the surface, leading to ground settlement.
“This has understandably been a frustrating situation for nearby residents,” said Leslie Campione, Chairman of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners. “Our priority from day one has been safety. Now that we have confirmation of the cause, we are focused on moving forward with a permanent repair solution as quickly and responsibly as possible.”
What Happens Next
Engineers have developed a recommended repair approach to stabilize the area and safely rebuild the roadway.
Lake County will now seek quotes from qualified vendors to complete the necessary repairs.
If approved, work would begin as soon as possible thereafter.
Commitment to Residents
Lake County understands the closure has disrupted daily routines, commutes, and access for residents in the area. Crews will continue monitoring the site to ensure public safety while the repair process moves forward.
Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available, including anticipated construction timelines once a contractor is selected.
