OCALA, FL (352today.com) – A Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy reportedly shot and killed a man who was wielding a firearm during a domestic dispute in Ocala.
According to a MCSO report, the deputy responded the deputy responded to a call about a domestic disturbance on the 14900 block of SW 35th Avenue Road in Ocala at approximately 2:26 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. The call, referencing 39-year-old James Cherry confronting his estranged wife at the residence, demanding to be let into the house, was made by a concerned friend of the wife who heard the altercation over the phone.
The deputy engaged Cherry, who wielded a firearm and failed to comply with commands to drop it. The deputy shot Cherry “to eliminate the threat,” according to the report.
The deputy then rendered aid until Marion County Fire Rescue arrived on the scene. Cherry was transported to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries.
“As is standard practice, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating, and the deputy involved is on paid administrative leave while the investigation is underway,” read the report.
