OCALA, FL (352Today.com) – Some lucky cats in Marion County will soon have more room to stretch out and relax, thanks to a donation of two stainless steel cages from Marion County Animal Services to nonprofit feline rescue Sheltering Hands.
On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the Marion County Board of County Commissioners approved the donation of two stainless steel animal cages from Marion County Animal Services to Sheltering Hands, a local nonprofit that provides care for cats in need.
The cages, which have a combined estimated value of $800, each have the capacity to house up to six small animals. Although the cages are approximately 30 years old, Animal Services determined they remain functional and suitable for Sheltering Hands’ needs.
The donation was made under Administrative Policy 4.3 and Florida Statute 274.05, which allows the Board to donate county equipment to nonprofit organizations.
Kyra Lynch, Director of Marion County Animal Services, initiated the item. There is no budget impact to the county from the donation.
In a letter dated June 27, 2026, Sheltering Hands Vice President Elena Goulet thanked Animal Services for the donation, noting the organization’s appreciation for the ongoing partnership with the county.
“Sheltering Hands appreciates our partnership with Marion County Animal Services,” Goulet wrote. “The hard work and dedication by your team is invaluable.”
The cages will be used to help care for animals at Sheltering Hands.
