MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The Marion County Board of Commissioners officially proclaimed Feb. 22-28, 2026, as Engineers Week in honor of National Engineers Week. Founded in 1951, National Engineers Week is celebrated in February around George Washington’s birthday, recognizing him as both the nation’s first president and a military engineer. This year’s celebration is especially meaningful as it coincides with America’s 250th birthday, honoring our nation’s rich history of innovation and leadership.
The proclamation recognizes the vital role professional engineers play in Marion County, from improving public safety, health, and welfare to supporting transportation, water, power, communications, and other essential systems. Commissioners also acknowledged engineers for inspiring students to pursue careers in math and science and for increasing public awareness of the engineering profession.
“Engineers shape the communities we live in every day,” said Chairman Carl Zalak, III. “From our roads and bridges to our schools and water systems, their work impacts every aspect of our lives. This week, we celebrate their dedication, creativity, and the bright future they help build for Marion County. As we mark America’s 250th birthday, it’s a perfect reminder of how innovation and ingenuity have shaped our nation from its earliest days.”
The 2026 National Engineers Week theme, “Transform Your Future,” emphasizes the impact of engineering in shaping opportunities, strengthening communities, and building a brighter future for residents and future generations.
