HERNANDO COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – A bit of a scare at a Hernando County school Wednesday after a student reported that another student possibly had a gun.

According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), deputies responded to Challenger K-8 located at 13400 Elgin Boulevard in Spring Hill.

They investigated the gun claim and say they found a 10-year-old girl had a pellet gun and pocketknife in her bookbag.

HCSO says they confiscated both and the student was detained by a school resource deputy.

Authorities say the student didn’t make any threats towards any students or staff. They also said the student never displayed the pellet gun or pocketknife at school.

“An investigation is underway to determine where she obtained the items from and what her intentions were,” shared the sheriff’s office in a Facebook post.

HCSO says the student was placed into ‘protective custody.’

According to the Hernando County School District Student Code of Conduct, weapons possession is a ‘Level IV’ infraction. A student is subjected to a pre-expulsion hearing and possible disciplinary actions including out of school suspension, expulsion-alternative placement, and social worker referral.
