ALACHUA COUNTY, FL (352today.com) Work has begun on the installation of a new pedestrian hybrid beacon along U.S. HWY 301 at the intersection of SE 69th Avenue in Hawthorne, and will continue for some time.
According to an announcement by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), work on the installation began Oct. 13, 2026, and will continue until “late 2026, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.”
“Traffic will be maintained in accordance with FDOT design standards throughout the project,” the announcement reads. “No lane closures will be allowed from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday.”
The beacon is basically a combination crosswalk and traffic signal; when a pedestrian activates the beacon, traffic is stopped by a red light.
The $500,000 installation is being done by American Lighting.
No more detailed information about the estimated date of completion is currently available.
