OCALA, FL (352today.com) – For nearly 40 years, Gilbert’s Hardware & General Store has been more than just a place to pick up tools or home supplies – it’s been a trusted neighbor and a welcoming hub for residents of northwestern Marion County.
Founded in 1986 by Tom Gilbert, the store was the result of his lifelong dream and years of experience in the building industry.
“Tom had always wanted a hardware store, as he was a frequent customer being in the building business for so many years,” said the Gilbert family. “He purchased the land Gilbert’s Hardware is on and had it rezoned as a commercial use property to open up our store in 1986.”

From the beginning, Gilbert’s operated on a simple idea: listen to the people.
“We listened to their [customer] requests of items they would like us to stock and built our large inventory over time through this method.”
Over the years, the store expanded alongside the community. In 2004, Gilbert’s introduced a grill and deli inside the shop – a unique addition that quickly became a local favorite, serving Boar’s Head meats, burgers and barbeque.

The original building now houses the deli and convenience section, while the hardware side has grown to more than 12,000 square feet. The expanded space is home to one of the largest selections of STIHL power equipment and Exmark zero-turn mowers in the area.
“Gilbert’s Hardware is one of the oldest dealerships of these two elite brands in Marion County,” the family said.

The store also proudly supports Ocala’s equestrian community by offering exclusive discounts on commercial-grade Exmark mowers through their equine savings program.
While their product offerings are impressive, it’s the people behind the counter – and in front of it – that truly define Gilbert’s.
“Being on a first-name basis with our customers is a huge part of our focus on customer service,” they said. “We want a personalized relationship with everyone that walks in.”

Three generations of the Gilbert family are present in the store every day. Their team, many of whom have been with them for years, is committed to offering the kind of friendly, down-to-earth service you’d expect from a family-run business.
“We’re like a well-oiled machine. We all work together and are not afraid to help each other out.”
And it shows. Their customers voted Gilbert’s Hardware “Best Hardware Store” in North Central Florida Media’s “Best of the 352.“

“Even after decades in business, the heart of Gilbert’s hasn’t changed. It’s a place where handshakes still matter, a hot lunch is always cooking, and regulars are greeted by name.”
“I personally enjoy working alongside family,” they said. “I feel there are not too many people that get to work with their family, and I am very grateful I get this opportunity.”
For first-time visitors or longtime locals, Gilbert’s offers more than hardware – it offers a little slice of home.
