OCALA, FL (352today.com) – For many of us, pets are family that bring joy, companionship, and even health benefits into our homes. But before you begin your spring planting, it’s important to make your home and yard are safe for your fur-fam.
Just like baby-proofing, pet-proofing your space includes checking for hidden hazards, especially toxic plants. Spring means many yards are filled with fresh greenery, but some popular plants can be harmful – even deadly – to dogs and cats.
Here are a few plants to watch out for in your yard or home:
- Sago Palm: Common in Florida landscapes, this tropical plant is beautiful but highly toxic – especially the seeds.
- Azaleas: Found in many Ocala gardens, these colorful shrubs can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and serious health issues if eaten.
- Lilies: Extremely dangerous to cats. Even licking the pollen can lead to kidney failure.
- Begonias: Popular for their beauty, begonias can cause irritation and drooling if pets munch on them.
- Aloe Vera: Known for its healing properties, aloe is harmful to pets due to toxic compounds that can cause digestive issues.
Be sure to regularly check indoor and outdoor spaces to make sure that no harmful plants are within paw’s reach. If you think your pet has ingested a toxic plant, call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888.426.4435 immediately.
