OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Recent discussions about the funding for the Ocala Gateway Project have raised questions about why the money isn’t being allocated for local roads and infrastructure. Some residents have expressed concerns about the source of the funds and how they are being used.

According to Ocala Marion County Visitors and Convention Bureau Marketing and Communications Supervisor Jessica Heller, the project is financed through the Tourist Development Tax (TDT) rather than grant money.

“It is important to know that the Gateway Project is not paid for with grant money. It is an approved expenditure of Tourist Development Tax Revenue. TDT is a 4% charge on the revenue from accommodation rentals of six months or less and is sent to the Marion County Tax Collector,” Heller explained.

The TDT is a state-regulated revenue source that must be used to promote tourism-related projects. “We use the revenue collected from the TDT, regulated by State Law, to promote and advertise Marion County as a tourism destination in the State of Florida pursuant to Florida Statute Section 125.04(5)(a)(3),” Heller added.

As the Ocala Gateway Project moves forward, officials emphasize that the funding is designated for tourism development rather than general infrastructure improvements.
