MIAMI, FL (352today.com) – Tropical Storm Rafael intensified as it neared the Cayman Islands on Tuesday, expected to become a hurricane as it approaches western Cuba.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported Rafael’s location at about 105 miles southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, with sustained winds reaching 60 mph. Moving northwest at 13 mph, the storm is expected to bring hurricane-force winds to Cuba by Wednesday.

The NHC has issued hurricane warnings for the Cayman Islands and several Cuban provinces, with tropical storm warnings in effect for Jamaica and other Cuban areas. Officials in the Cayman Islands and Jamaica have closed schools and government offices, urging residents to complete storm preparations.

What does it mean for Florida?

While models suggest a possible westward turn away from Florida, the region could still experience heavy rains and gusty winds on Wednesday and Thursday if Rafael’s track shifts east. Local officials are preparing for potential flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
