TALLAHASSEE, FL (352today.com) – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has taken steps to demonstrate solidarity with Israel in response to the weekend attack by Hamas that has killed hundreds.

On Monday, DeSantis directed Florida’s Capitol building to be lit in blue and white, and flags of the U.S. and state of Florida to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Friday, Oct. 13.

On Saturday, Oct. 7, Hamas militants stormed from the blockaded Gaza Strip into nearby Israeli towns, killing dozens and abducting others in an unprecedented, surprise attack during a major Jewish holiday. Israel retaliated launching airstrikes in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said over the weekend the country is now at war with Hamas.

To date, hundreds of Israelis have died including many civilian women and children, and over 100 have been taken hostage.

On Saturday, President Joe Biden said the people of Israel were “under attack orchestrated by a terrorist organization.”

From the White House, Biden said that the United States “stands with the people of Israel in the face of these terrorist assaults. Israel has the right to defend itself and its people, full stop. There’s never a justification for terrorist attacks and my administration’s support for Israeli’s security is rock solid and unwavering.’’

In Florida, DeSantis’ memo condemned the attacks calling it a direct assault on the people of Israel and the Jewish community. “We reinforce our commitment to Israel and our fight against anti-Israel sentiments. Florida stands with the State of Israel and Israeli citizens,” DeSantis said.

Meanwhile, Floridians are rallying to show their support. In south Florida, pro-Israel supporters attended a rally in Aventura Monday evening.
