GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) – Two blocks of downtown Gainesville that have undergone a major transformation over the past two years will be officially unveiled as The Streatery on Friday, November 6, 2026.
The project, a sort of experiment to convert a small region of downtown into a walkable dining, shopping and cultural events destination, was approved by the Gainesville City Commission in Oct. 2024. The area, along Southwest First Avenue between South Main Street and Southwest Second Street, has undergone a pedestrian-friendly makeover.
“The $4.5 million construction project, approved by the city commission in March 2026, is funded through the Gainesville Community Reinvestment Area (GCRA) and the gas tax fund,” read an announcement, in part. “GCRA is a 10-year program (2019-2029) administered by the city and funded by the city and Alachua County. Reconstruction of The Streatery began in April 2026 with replacement of underground electrical, water and stormwater infrastructure beneath the corridor and two intersecting streets.”
The ribbon cutting, scheduled for 5-6 p.m. next Friday, will feature “live music, local food and family activities,” as well as remarks from Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward, Interim City Manager Andrew Persons and Alachua County Commissioner Marihelen Wheeler.
This event is free and open to the public.
