MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The Florida Department of Health in Marion County has issued a 60-day rabies alert after a raccoon found in the Ocala area tested positive for rabies.

The alert was announced Thursday, May 14, 2026, following confirmation of a rabid raccoon that was killed near SE Eighth Street on May 11.

Health officials said rabies is currently present in the wild animal population in the area and warned residents and visitors to avoid contact with wild or stray animals.

The alert includes NE Eighth Street, SE 22nd Road, SE 22nd Loop and SW Fourth Avenue. Officials said animals that commonly carry rabies include raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats and coyotes.

The health department urged residents to keep pets supervised and vaccinated, avoid feeding or handling wild animals and secure garbage or pet food that could attract wildlife. Anyone bitten or scratched by a wild or domestic animal is advised to seek medical attention immediately and report the incident to DOH-Marion at 352-629-0137.

Residents who believe their pets may have been exposed to rabies should contact a veterinarian and Marion County Animal Services at 352-671-8727.
