OCALA, FL (352today.com) – The Ocala Symphony Orchestra (OSO) is pleased to announce that Music Director and Conductor Matthew Wardell has signed a new five-year contract, extending his artistic leadership of the organization through the 2029–2030 season.

Wardell, who began his tenure with the OSO in 2009, has been a driving force behind the orchestra’s artistic growth, community impact, and institutional development. His renewed commitment to the orchestra—announced as the OSO enters its milestone 50th anniversary season—also includes an option to extend the partnership through 2034.

“Performing in Maestro Wardell’s OSO continues to be a highlight of my musical career,” said Chip Birkner, the orchestra’s principal timpanist and Associate Professor of Music at the University of Florida. “He has firmly established himself as an artistic leader and innovator in the symphonic world, and it is an honor to play under his baton. I couldn’t be more excited to continue making music with him and the Ocala Symphony Orchestra.”

Under Wardell’s leadership, the OSO has expanded its programming, deepened community engagement, and presented ambitious repertoire alongside dynamic guest artists. He is widely recognized for cultivating a loyal and enthusiastic audience, creating performances that are both artistically bold and community-centered.

Wardell’s influence in Ocala extends well beyond the podium. He was instrumental in the development of the Reilly Arts Center, a premier performing arts venue that is managed by the Ocala Symphony Orchestra. He served as the Reilly’s CEO and Artistic Director for its first nine years and continues to serve as Artistic Advisor to the board of directors and staff. He also played a key role in the OSO’s plan and execution to begin managing downtown Ocala’s historic Marion Theatre in 2020 — now a thriving venue for film, comedy, and live music.

In addition to his work in Ocala, Wardell is a frequent guest conductor with the Jacksonville Symphony and has made recent appearances with The Florida Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh, New England Philharmonic, and Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra.
