Photographic exhibition “The human pulse” opens June 21 at the Appleton Museum

Ocala photographer John Elliott showcases 42 global black-and-white images through January 2026.

OCALA, FL (352today.com) — A powerful new photography exhibition by Ocala-based artist John Elliott will be on view in the Appleton Museum’s Balcony Gallery for Florida Artists from June 21, 2025, through January 18, 2026.

Titled “The Human Pulse: Photographs by John Elliott,” the exhibition features 42 black-and-white images from Elliott’s ongoing series that documents the breadth of human experience across 32 countries.

Elliott says his photographs aim to reflect “a dreamlike vantage point: floating somewhat above, sometimes even at a great distance, but still connected to the moment.” His artistic vision was shaped by the influential “The Family of Man” exhibition, which he discovered as a child in his father’s library.

“Only decades later did I recollect perusing it with interest as a child, and the memories of many images remained vivid,” Elliott said. “Recently musing upon the genesis of one of my series, ‘The Human Pulse,’ I began to realize how influential this book was on my photographic vision. I strive to paint a multi-faceted spectrum of global humanity — joy to suffering, spontaneity to reflection.”

Free Guided Tour with the Artist

On Saturday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m., Elliott will lead a tour of his exhibition as part of the Appleton’s Free First Saturday program. No reservation is needed to attend the tour, which begins in the Balcony Gallery.

About the Artist

Elliott was born in Spring Valley, New York, and spent his early years in Manhattan before relocating to Coral Gables, Florida, where he developed a passion for photography. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Ohio University and previously served as a U.S. Foreign Service officer, including diplomatic posts in Brazil and Saudi Arabia. He now lives in Ocala with his family and is a founder of the Ocala Photography Group.

Regular museum admission applies except on Free First Saturdays. The Appleton Museum of Art, a campus of the College of Central Florida, is located at 4333 E.
