MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The strongest earthquake to occur just off Cuba in 150 years was felt far and wide–including right here in the 352.
The quake, which was measured at 6.1 on the Richter Scale by the U.S. Geological Survey, occurred off northwest Cuba at approximately 12:45 EST on Monday, June 8, 2026.
Residents in Marion County who were located both north and south of Ocala reported feeling the earthquake while indoors. In Lake County, the city offices were closed temporarily while its buildings were inspected, according to an announcement from the county. Numerous residents dismissed the shaking as a result of nearby Navy bombing training in social media comments.
The quake, which the USGS said occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 16.16 miles, occurred approximately 64 miles west-southwest of Havana, and around 550 miles from Marion County.
